Charlie Sheen Makes Interesting Child Support Deal with Ex-Wife
Charlie Sheen agrees to pay ex-wife, Brooke Mueller child support despite not having custody over their twins.
Sheen and Mueller were married for three years and divorced in 2011. They have twin sons together, Bob and Max, who were removed from Mueller’s custody after she was hospitalized for alleged drug abuse.
The two boys were then placed in custody of Sheen’s other ex-wife, Denise Richards.
On September 17, 2013, it was reported that Sheen and Mueller made a deal out of court with a mediator in which he would pay her $25,000 a month in child support, even though she doesn’t have custody of the twins.
Sheen says he wants to provide her with that money so she can try to regain custody of the boys.
This arrangement is obviously unusual since child support is typically paid to the parent who has custody over the children. However, in some cases, courts may order that child support payments be paid and/or continue to be made to a parent whose child custody has been temporarily suspended.
What about Denise Richards? Some would say that she deserves some support as well. Does a third party have rights to child support?
If neither parent has custody of the children, and a third party is caring for the children, or has been appointed as their guardian, the court will ultimately make the decision about who owes what in child support. Those details are not automatic, and would be determined by the judge.
